Many may not know, but 4x NBA All-Star, 4x All-NBA Second Team, and 2015 NBA Scoring Champion Russell Westbrook was in fact born in Long Beach! Raised by his dad in South Central LA Westbrook went to Leuzinger high school where he was a 5'8 140lb freshman PG who didn't get a start on his varsity squad until his junior year. Westbrook received his first college letter the summer before his senior season, in which he also stopped growing that same summer, and topped off at 6'3. His senior year he averaged a whooping 25ppg, 8rebs, and 3stls, scored 30+ in 8 games, and recorded 14 double-doubles that season! He capped off his senior year with a 51 point game at Carson on January 6th in 2006. Surprisingly Westbrook didn't receive much attention from top tier colleges, until UCLA's Ben Howland decided to give him a shot when Jordan Famar declared for the draft. In his start at UCLA he played as a back up for Darren Collison, and didn't really have much of a role, but the next season he got his shine after Collison got injured. His sophomore season he averaged 12ppg, and added 4 assists, and almost 4 rebounds, and after that he decided to enter the NBA Draft where he was drafted by Seattle Supersonic (now known as the Oklahoma City Thunder). Now Westbrook is a top point guard in the NBA averaging pretty much a double-double with 26ppg, 7rebs, and 9assts! If he keeps this up the MVP award could easily be within reach, and with co-superstar Kevin Durant back the OKC Thunder are a definite contender for the title! Keep up with Beastbrook's season below, and watch the Long Beach born basketball star shine on as he continues his career!
